Caring for the Senior Citizens

IntroductionWhen we get old, we start thinking about our past life. We start worrying about our future. Many questions come into our mind. What is our position now? Shall we be happy in future? Shall we be loved? Shall we be alone? Who will take care of us? We all have seen many different life styles of senior citizens, both happy and sad. Each one of us will be a senior citizen one day. In the past people used to take care of the elderly members of their families happily. They had love and respect for the elderly members of their families. People felt blessed and contented in taking care of senior citizens in the families, and even in the society. But today care of senior citizens has become a matter of serious concern.

Problem of Senior Citizens: Today senior citizens have many problems. The most important problems they face are deteriorating health, malnutrition, lack of shelter, fear, depression, senility, isolation, boredom and financial support. These problems are faced by the elderly people all over the world.

Causes of the problem: It is unfortunate that today in our so called modern society care of senior citizens is being discussed or talked as 'problem'. Except some exceptional cases, a large number of elderly people are ignored and considered as burden or problem by their families all over the world. That's why the concept of old age home has emerged. Its most important reason is that we are losing our values (sanskars). Our selfish attitude, fast increasing trend of nuclear families, and individual freedom are some of the main causes.

Care of Senior Citizens: Elderly people feel happy and contented with their families. They wish to spend their whole life with their children and grand children. They have a longing to be loved and respected by their families. So it's very painful for them when they are either left alone or sent to old age homes. The members of the family should take as much care of their elderly members as possible. This care should be the collective efforts of all the members in the family. The care of the aged man or woman should not rest on the shoulders of any one member of the family. This can make the situation less stressful. Even if some of the members live in another city, they should involve themselves in the seniors' care as much as possible. We should discuss the needs and problems of the elderly members. We should remain alert towards the needs of the elders and should interact with them regularly so that they may not feel isolated. If there are grand children in the family, they should regularly spend some time with their grandparents. The grand children can do some activities with them so that their feelings of isolation may be removed to some extent.

Conclusion: Traditionally elderly care has been the responsibility of the family. But in modern societies elderly care is now being provided by state or charitable institutions. In a recent study conducted by the Senior Citizens Welfare Trust, it was revealed that 98 percent of the elderly people prefer to stay with their families rather than be admitted to old age homes. Away from their families, they feel that they are neglected and don't have enough reason to remain alive. In fact this is not a very serious problem. Just one thought is enough to solve this problem. Before leaving our elderly parents or grandparents alone, just think how they dedicated their whole life for us. Before getting them admitted to old age homes, just think how they sacrificed their comfort and happiness for our sake because they sought their real happiness in us (their children). Just think why we have drawn a line between their happiness and ours. Why are we debarring ourselves from getting their blessings, their moral support, and their precious guidance? It would be wonderful if we love and respect them, share our joys and worries with them. Just try to feel immense happiness and contentment by taking care of our senior citizens at home and in the society.
