Clean Ganga Mission Essay
Introduction: India is a country that has a number of rivers. The
Ganga is the largest river in India. The length of the river is 2510Km. It
originates from the western Himalaya. It passes through the states of
Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. This river
provides water to about 40% of India’s population across eleven states. The
Ganga River is a symbol of religious faith for Hindus who regard it a holy
river. This river is also very helpful in economic and religious development in
India. But now the Ganga River has been polluted.
Causes of Pollution: Many causes are responsible for the
pollution of this pious river. A large number of industrial cities like Kanpur,
Allahabad, Varanasi and Patna stand on the bank of this river. Their countless
tanneries, chemical plants, textile mills, slaughter houses and hospitals flow
waste into it. The Ganga is a sacred river for the Hindus. They bathe in the
river to redeem themselves from their past sins. They use soaps and detergent
too. Some materials like food waste and leaves are left in Ganga for
ritualistic reasons. Thousands of bodies are cremated on the banks of the
river. As people think by doing so the soul directly reaches heaven. Sewage is
poured into the Ganga People use its water for bathing, eating, drinking and in
many other ways. They become prey of many diseases like cholera, typhoid,
jaundice etc. Increasing population is also one of the main cause to pollute
the holy River Ganga.
The Haridwar dam was built in 1854 during British Colonization of India. This has led to decay of the Ganga by greatly diminishing the flow of the river. The Farakka Barrage was built to divert fresh water from this holy river but it has a damaging effect on the ground water and soil along the river. Over extraction and exploitation are also the main reasons for the pollution of The River Ganga.
Cleaning efforts: A number of
plans have been activated to clean the river. But the satisfactory is not yet
found. The Ganga Action Plan was launched in January 1986. By the Prime
Minister Rajiv Gandhi to reduce the pollution load on the river but the plan
become futile. Then this plan was withdrawn on 31st March 2000. The
steering committee of the National River Conservation Authority reviewed the
progress of the GAP (The Ganga Action Plan) and did necessary correction.
National River Ganga Basis Authority was established by the central of India on 20 February 2009 . The
Supreme Court has been working on the relocation of many plants like Tulsi
along the Ganga. India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Damodar Das Modi affirmed
to work for cleaning the river and controlling pollution. Namami Ganga Project was announced by the government in July 2014
to clean The Ganga.
Conclusion: Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru said that
The Ganga River is the heart and soul of India and it gives shelter to millions of people. So it is our duty to clean it and save it from being polluted. In 2008 it was recognized as the national river of India. The Gangs river which is the life line of millions of people and of Great religious significance, should not be polluted by domestic sewage and industrial pollutants. People should be made aware how to keep The Ganga clean.
